WHAT WAS THE POLITICAL SYSTEM IN EGLAND LIKE?

  • The government was a personal monarchy with ministers
  • There were kings and queens but the monarchs made the main decisions
  • They determined the issues of the natural region
  • During that time the majority of people were protestants

THE MAIN PERSON IN POWER WAS QUEEN ELIZABETH THE FIRST

  • Queen Elizabeth(1533-1603) ruled from 1558-1603
  • She was known as the virgin queen Gloriana or good queen bess
  • Her parents were Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII
  • Her mother died when she was 2 and her father in 1547
  • Her brother(ruling at that time was ruling) died in 1553

HOW QUEEN ELIZABETHWAS PERCIEVED...

  • Her sister (bloody mary) and her cousin fought for the throne
  • Her sister won and after she did , tried to convert everyone into catholics
  • She killed 30 protestants that why shes known as "bloody mary"
  • Queen elizabeth immediately takes throne and control
  • Many didnt want her to rule because she wasnt married

THE STRUGGLES...

  • After queen Elizabeth took throne Mary had caused many problems
  • England was at war agiants the french
  • There were many uprisings/revolts from the protestants and catholics
  • In 1585 the Spanish Armada declares war on England

THREATS TOWARD THE POLITICAL SYSTEM IN ENGLAND

  • The pope during that time excommunicated her (removed her for a while)
  • Towards the end of her throne the war between france and spain ended(no one "won")
  • at the beginning of Shakespeare's life most people were protestants but...
  • Because of the uprisings towards the end of his life most people were catholic

SHAKESPEARE'SRELATIONSHIP WITH THE COURT

  • The poet throughout his life greatly supported any decisions queen Elizabeth made
  • Queen Elizabeth and King James I, greatly loved the drama and hos style of plays
  • devoted herself to the study of the ancient classical period
  • she also delighted in her own theatrical entertainments, and used his plays to inspire other "actors"

THE THREE BODIES OF THE GOVERNMENT

  • These three bodies would work together to:
  • Govern the country raise money, and make laws
  • Of great influence in tudor and the elizabethan era were the nobility and gentry.
  • Land was power during erlymodern period. Those who possesed it wealthy.
  • Many of them were masters of the tenants on the land as well as those who worked for them

  • Court refers to the main political system or leaders during that time
  • Durning the elizabethan era the "court" leaders were: queen Elizabeth,king James and pope V
  • The monarchs were in control of the government before queen Elizabeth but...
  • Lost their power after she came in throne
