Siberian Tiger

By: Martina Fuentes

Where they live?

  • They live primarily in eastern Russia's birch forests, though some exist in China and North Korea.
  • Northern forests offer the lowest human density of any tiger habitat, and the most complete ecosystem.
  • They love to live in the cold.

What do they eat?

  • Siberian tigers feed mainly on wild boar, elk and deer, but they also eat lynx and even bears. If the tiger cannot find larger prey it instead feeds on fish, rodents and rabbits. During normal conditions, around 50 percent of the tiger's diet will be of wild boar.

The cubs are born with their eyes closed and are, therefore, blind. They are born at any point through out the year.

Adapting to the weather

The Siberian tiger is considered a critically endangered species with the primary threats to its' survival in the wild being poaching and habitat loss from intensive logging and development. Mostly because of deforestation but also because Siberian tigers are commonly poached for their fur and for their body parts used in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Physical Characteristics

  • The male measures an average of 295 centimeters in length, from head to tail.
  • Females are slightly smaller, at an average length of 275 centimetres.
  • Males weigh about 176 kilograms.
  • Females approximately 118 kilograms or 260 pounds.
  • Particularly narrow black stripes on its rusty-coloured coat

Fun facts

  • Only 12 White Siberian tigers have been spotted (by eye) in the wild.
  • There are about 400 of these tigers left in the zoo and the wild all around the world. Some are even kept for test for medicine advances.
  • Approximately 80% of the cubs die from serious birth defects as a result of inbreeding that is necessary to create the white coat.

Extinction of tiger is actually two things. It is the extinction of another apex predator. And it is the extinction of Tiger, the flagship species. If no one takes action, and Siberian tigers die out, then wolves will come in to the areas that are left, and will threaten farmers and other locals. If you search "Russian wolves," you will find that Russia has been having serious wolf problems.
