SANITARY/ HYGIENE

Untitled Slide

  • The captains didn't provide any hygiene for the slaves at all
  • if you were lucky the captains would place buckets for you to use the restroom in
  • The the chains were around their ankles, so it was hard to move anywhere, most of the time slaves wouldn't try to use the restroom cause it was painful to move; they would let loose right where they were
  • When the weather got hot and humid, there would be a layer of filth on the ground

PACKED

Untitled Slide

  • loose packing: carry fewer slaves then the ship could hold--used to prevent disease and deaths
  • tight packing: carried as many as the ship could carry and even more at times--the more slaves they had.. the more profit they made
  • the slaves were positioned parallel, and chained ankle to wrist
