SPONGES

  • No tissu
  • They are mobile
  • 98% are marine and 2% are freshwater
  • When being made into cleaning sponges no chemicals added to make soft and squishy
  • Can live by the surface of water and the bottom of the ocean

PORIFERA, KINGDOM ANIMALISTIC

  • The phylum of sponges which are sessile, suspension - feeding, multicellular animals. They are probably an early evolutionary side branch that gave rise to no other groups of animals. Except for about 150 freshwater sponges are marine animals.

  • Diversity of species ~8,000 species
  • Phylum porifera
  • From Greek “passage” or “pore”
  • Sponges have tiny openings all over their body = Poer - bearers
  • Most sponges are MARINE, some live in freshwater
