ABOUT LEWIS

Sinclair Lewis was born in a prairie village in Minnesota on February 7, 1885. He attended college at Yale University. He was a novelist, playwright, and a short story writer. He was married to two women, but ended up divorcing both, and he had two children. He died at the age of 65 on January 10, 1951.

One of the reasons Sinclair Lewis is a well known author is the way he writes. One of the genres he falls under in his writing is satire. In one of his well known stories called Babbitt, he writes in a satirical form about American culture and society that critiques the empty-headedness of middle class life and the social pressure toward conformity. Lewis’ biggest accomplishment was when he received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1930. His novel Babbitt was one of the main reasons he received this award. One of the quotes in his writing Babbitt states, “You’re so earnest about morality to think how essentially immoral you must be underneath.” Even though Babbitt is considered a satire novel, he is very honest in what he writes and does not hold back in what he says.

three main characteristics that describe Lewis’ works are detail, satire, and realism. Many book critiques praised him for the work he did because of how real it was and literal it is. He was great at making detail to create scenes of the American middle class. He falls under the genre of social fiction and he writes his novels in a very realistic style and realistic language. He artfully describes American lifestyle in the realism of how they live and how they act. Again the critiques would praise him for his realism and honesty in the way he writes. One critique says “American culture seems always to have had a literary spokesman, a single writer who presented American culture and American attitudes toward its culture, to the world,” and Lewis was this author.

Babbitt was not Lewis’s only well known book, he also wrote Arrowhead, Main Street, Elmer Gantry, and more. As I have been researching him and his works, I have definitely become very interested in what and how he writes and one day I would love to read one of his well known books and get to experience his writing, especially a satire.

The essential question I came up with is How are humans often deceptive? My answer to this question is that it is because humans are frequently lying about everything, so most of the time others do not know who to trust. This causes many people to seem deceptive and untrustworthy, which then could effect other people and their self.
