any organ that produces a secretion

Endocrine

  • Ductless
  • secretes hormones directly into the bloodstream
  • carried by blood or lymph

Exocrine

  • Carried by a duct or organ to the surface of a tissue

Hormone

active chemical that regulates the function of other organs

Functions of Hormones

  • Regulation of:
  • metabolism
  • growth & development
  • reproduction
  • stress response
  • cell permeability

Secretion & Storage of Hormones

  • formed by the ER
  • transported by Golgi apparatus
  • nerves or chemicals signal secretions

Endocrine Gland

Pituitary Gland: master gland

Anterior Lobe Hormones

  • ACTH
  • GH, HGH (growth hormone)
  • TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone)
  • Gonadtropins: FSH & LH
  • LTH (prolactin)
  • MSH (melanocyte stimulating hormone)

Posterior Lobe Hormones

  • ADH (antiduretic homone)
  • Oxytocin

Adrenal Glands

  • hormones:
  • secretes hormones made from cholesterol (LDL)

Ovaries
