Assessment

  • A process of obtaining information that is used for making decisions about students (curricula, programs, schools etc.)

Assessment Purposes

  • Preassessment: Diagnostic tool to understand what knowledge your students bring into the classroom
  • Formative: Provides information for improvement as learning progresses
  • Summative: A final evaluation of accomplishment on a given assessment at a given point in time

Basic Terms

  • Test: An instrument for describing one or more characteristics of a student using either a numerical scale or classification scheme
  • Measurement: Assigning numbers (scores) to a specific attribute or characteristic of a person such that the number describes to what degree the person possesses the attribute

  • Evaluation: The process of making a value judgement about the worth of a student's product or performance
  • Achievement: Student performance of the learning goals (how well they show what they know)

  • A record of your students' progress
  • Summative (final)
  • Grades should be based on more than test scores
  • Use a variety of assessment techniques
  • Should communicate student acivement of learning goals
  • Should be based on high-quality evidence

  • Use sound principles of assessment planning, design, task development, rubric development
  • Make sure your assessments are free of bias
  • Accommodate your stduents appropriately
  • Provide sufficient information to students
