SQUIZZY TAYLOR

ONE OF MELBOURN’S MOST WELL KNOWN GANGSTERS

Squizzy taylor was born in Brighton, Melbourne, on the 29th of June, 1888.

THE FOLLOWING IS THE DESCRIPTION OF SQUIZZY TAYLOR GIVEN TO LAW FORCES.

  • "Known as 'Squizzy' Taylor, aged 44 years, looks 31 years, 5ft. 2in. in height, of light build, dark complexion, clean shaven, dark, piercing eyes, generally dressed in a blue twill suit, a black overcoat with a belt at the back and a velvet collar, and a black boxer hat. He has a jockey-like appear- ance."

There are different fabled reasons that may be why Squizzy Taylor was called ‘Squizzy’. One was that it came from the the word ‘Squiz’ (To glance)because of Squizzy Taylor’s droopy left eyelid. On other theory is that the nick name was from the way Squizzy ran in a ‘Squizzy’ Motion.

Squizzy Taylor’s Spouses
SQUIZZY’S first wife, Charlotte Haines also known as ‘Dolly’ Another wife later was Lorna Kellie and also Ida Pender.

Squizzy was often seen in the dress circle of her majesties theatre with a different girl at his side from his wife.

HE GOT CON FICTIONS OF:

  • Assault,
  • Larceny,
  • Picking pockets,
  • Black mail,
  • breaking and entering-of which he wa latter acquitted of.

SUSPECTED OF:

  • Murder,
  • Sly grog,
  • robbery,
  • Illegal Gambling,

8. 1915 changed licences premises time 9:00-9:30 19 of December 1919 legislation was changed so hotel opening hours are 9:00 to 6:00. People who wanted alcohol after hours had to obtain it illegally. The illegal liquor is often called ‘Sly grog’

HIS MAIN RIVAL WAS THE FITZROY GANG.

SQUIZZY IS WELL KNOWN FOR BEING ONE OF THE MOST

NOTORIOUS GANGSTERS IN MELBOURNE.

TAYLOR WAS KILLED ON THE 27TH OF OCTOBER 1927.

He had been asked by a friend that was behind bars too watch a business. When Daniel ‘Snowy’ cutmore came too the bar and smashed things up Taylor decided too stop him.

He went to Snowy’s house and tried too surprise snowy in his sleep. Unfortunately for Squizzy, Snowy slept with a gun under his pillow.

Snowy Sat up and a shoot out began and continued for a few minutes. Snowy was shot through the heart while his wife was shot non leather in the shoulder.

Squizzy was shot. He ran out to the taxi he had come in. His backup took him too the hospital where he died shortly later.
