Background / History

  • All states in the US have laws against animal abuse.
  • Forms of animal abuse can include being neglectful to animals, not giving them the required amount of food and water for survival and / or refusing to give necessary medical care.

  • Hunting and use of certain animals in experimentation is not considered illegal.
  • Although, many animal activists disapprove of this.

  • Reasons for inflicting animal abuse on animals not owned by the offender include revenge sending threats, and / or intimitation

Problems

  • According to the AAMC, break – ins caused by animal rights advocates costed over $4.5 million by 1990.
  • Between 1979 and 1995, the ALF has caused 75+ attacks in the USA.

Problems

  • These attacks included the theft of animals from labs in 7 states, starting fires in the largest department stores in Chicago against the sale of furs, the burning and vandalizing of the veterinary lab of the University of Arizona, the University of California's veterinary diagnostic center for farm animals, research office and theft of their animals in Michigan and Texas.

Problems

  • While most of their targets were scientific laboratories, in England 1990m, they have also caused the bombing of two research scientists' cars. As well as undergoing raids in 12+ countries.
  • Annually 50+ incidents of vandalism at research facilities and attacks on researchers were reported by the FBI in the late 1980s.

  • The method where animals are provided for their welfare and raised for resources is called humane animal farming.

Solutions

  • Animals in the wild and under the care of humans should not be forced to experience unnecessary suffering while being provided with everything they need.
  • HFAC has set standards where farms are required to provide animals with lots of space, a shelter, and handling of animals where if limits the amount of stress put on them.

Solutions

  • Animals should not be contained in cages, crates, etc. They should be able to roam freely, flap their wings, dust bathe, etc.
  • Animals should not be given growth hormones and / or antibiotics.
