WHAT IS A DEMOGRAPHIC TRANSITION MODEL?
Helps explain the structure of a population
Depicts the population totals( CBR, CDR, etc)
Is broken into four stages by levels of advancement of region
Portrays societal evolution

STAGE 1- LOW GROWTH
The natural increase rate was about 0
Population stayed at about 500,000
CBR and CDR rates were relatively similar
Agricultural Revolution incited; changed how to obtain food
Humans began to domesticate plants and animals

STAGE 2- HIGH GROWTH
Population grew 10 times faster starting in 1750
CDR drastically decreases but CBR stays same
Living conditions improve greatly, extending life expectancy
Medical revolution occurred in late 20th century
New medical practices eliminated many previously fatal diseases

STAGE 3- MODERATE GROWTH
Significant decline in mortality rate
Social convention becomes to have fewer children
CDR continues to decline because of modern medical technology
Because of economic changes, children are no longer needed for work
More people live in the city, where homes cannot accommodate large families

STAGE 4- LOW GROWTH
Natural increase is about zero ( Zero Population Growth)
Many women in societies have jobs, instead of staying at home
Broader access to birth control methods
People spend more time in entertainment activities than child care
Total population is much higher than in Stage 1
