STAGE 1- LOW GROWTH

  • The natural increase rate was about 0
  • Population stayed at about 500,000
  • CBR and CDR rates were relatively similar

  • Humans began to domesticate plants and animals

STAGE 2- HIGH GROWTH

  • Population grew 10 times faster starting in 1750
  • CDR drastically decreases but CBR stays same
  • Living conditions improve greatly, extending life expectancy
  • Medical revolution occurred in late 20th century
  • New medical practices eliminated many previously fatal diseases

STAGE 3- MODERATE GROWTH

  • Significant decline in mortality rate
  • Social convention becomes to have fewer children
  • CDR continues to decline because of modern medical technology
  • Because of economic changes, children are no longer needed for work
  • More people live in the city, where homes cannot accommodate large families

STAGE 4- LOW GROWTH

  • Natural increase is about zero ( Zero Population Growth)
  • Many women in societies have jobs, instead of staying at home
  • Broader access to birth control methods
  • People spend more time in entertainment activities than child care
  • Total population is much higher than in Stage 1
