HISTORY OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS IN 1692

  • Salem was founded in 1626 by Roger Conant.
  • At first the settlement was called Naumkeag.
  • In June of 1692, the city's name was changed to Shalom or Salem.
  • The meaning of the name Shalom, or Salem, in Hebrew is "City of Peace"
  • Puritans and Quakers started many of America's first 13 colonies

SALEM VILLAGE VS. SALEM TOWN

  • In 1692 salem divided into 2 different sections
  • The village was the main source for food and crops where the less wealthy lived
  • The town was where the main trade center was and the more wealthy lived
  • During the salem witch trials, jealousy played a major part in who was accused and;
  • Who was the accuser

TOWN VS. VILLAGE CONTU.

  • The only church was in town.. 5+ miles away
  • so when the villagers wanted a church the town declined this
  • propsoition.
  • Therefor causing a huge disagreement which also plays a big factor
  • in the witch trials later on.

ABOUT GILES COREY

  • He was a dedicated farmer and churchman.
  • He lived in the south western part of the Salem village.
  • He was married three times.
  • Giles Corey was born before 19 August 1621 in England.
  • There isn't much under his name that shows his type of behavior.

  • He lived in the southwest corner of salem village
  • Was a full member of his church
  • His wife during the time of the accusations name was Martha Corey
  • He was baptized in St. Sepulcher's church, North Hampton.

GILES COREY WAS ACCUSED BY ANN PUTNAM JR., MERCY LEWIS, AND ABIGAIL WILLIAMS OF WITCHCRAFT.

WHAT HE WAS ACCUSED OF DOING.

  • Appearing to Mercy Lewis as a specter.
  • Beating her.
  • Trying to force her to write her name in the Devil's book.
  • Ann Putnam jr. Claimed that a ghost appeared to her, and said that Corey had killed him.

WHAT WAS GILES COREY'S RESPONSE?

HIS RESPONSE

GILES COREY DECIDED TO REFUSE TO ENTER ANY PLEA WHATSOEVER.

WHAT HAPPENED.

GILES COREY WAS PRESSED DOWN, AND DEPRIVED OF MOST FOOD AND WATER FOR MANY DAYS.

WHEN ASKED TO PLEA GUILTY HE SAID...

FINAL THOUGHTS

  • He seemed like a very good Christian man.
  • He obviously got trialled because most of the townspeople;
  • Didn't like him because of the huge flood ordeal.
  • Giles was a very good and faithful man and;
  • Stood up for what he believed in...
