  • Almanzo has been working on the farm with his father, however he is of age to go to the Academy.
  • Almanzo is not excited to go to the Academy, it means leaving his beloved horse Starlight behind and not being able to be outside working with his hands.
  • His family gets a letter from Aunt Martha and Uncle George and how wonderful the west is.
  • Uncle George and Aunt Martha invite them. To their home in Spring Valley, MN to see first hand.
  • Almanzo' s father decides to go explore the land in MN and takes most of the family with, leaving behind Eliza Jane and Royal to rune the farm while they exploe the west.

THE WEST

  • Saying good-bye to starlight was so very painful and sad.
  • The family boarded a train and road for several days before arriving in Spring Valley MN.
  • George met them at the train station and took them to his homestead.
  • Living with George and Martha was cramped and uncomfortable.
  • Martha was not very welcoming and not nice to the children, they felt unwelcome.

MOVING IN

  • Amanzo's family purchased a large farm neighboring Aunt Martha and Uncle George's farm.
  • They finally moved to a home of their own, out of Aunt Martha and Uncle George's home.
  • Uncle George has been ill for several months, so Almanzo continued to help on him farm.
  • Almanzo receives the perfect Christmas gift, queen a new horse was a yearling.
  • In the Spring they traveled back to NY to sell the Farm in Malone and move the entire family west.

CONFLICT

  • Almanzo lives to work with horses.
  • He understands them and enjoys working and training them.
  • He has been working with his horse Starlight for three years has him fully trained.
  • When he goes west he must leave his beloved horse and friend behind.
  • It is about two years that he is seep rated from Starlight.

RESOLUTION

  • For a Christmas gift Almanzo gets a now yearling, Queen.
  • He spends as much time with her as he can when he is not working on the farm.
  • He begins training her just like he trained Starlight. He hopes to bread them once they move Starlight west.
  • The family travels back to Malone and the first place Almanzo goes is to the barn to see Starlight his best friend.
  • He informs Starlight that they will sail west soon and live on a new farm in Spring Valley, MN.
