POPULATION

  • The population of Nigeria,as of 2013, was 173.6 million
  • In 1960 the population was only about 50 Million.
  • By 1990 it had reached 100 million and has kept growing
  • Lagos,Abuja,Calabar are the Top 3 popular cities of Nigeria

CIVIL WAR IN NIGERIA

  • A civil war broke out when the nigerians attacked the Republic of Biafra
  • In 1960 Nigeria gained independence from Britian
  • 6 years later,Muslims started massacring Christian igbos
  • After efforts by Nigeria to reunite the country failed,war broke out

NATURAL RESOURCES

  • Nigeria has a lot of petroleum
  • They also have these natural resources.....
  • Natural gas,tin,ore,iron,coal,niobium, lead, zinc and arable land & limestone
  • Nigeria is Part of OPEC.

ETHNICITIES

  • The Igbo is the main ethnic group in southeastern Nigeria
  • Igbo claim to have been unfairly targeted by laws that are against their faith
  • They have represented some of the loyalist opponents of Sharia law

  • Agriculture is Nigeria's leading Industry
  • They also have banking
  • financial services, clothing and textiles, telecommunications, manufacturing

GOVERNMENT AND LEADER

  • Nigeria is a Federal Republic government
  • The leader of this country was Alhaji Umaru Yar'Adua
  • He was sworn as president in 2007 but died in 2010
  • The current leader is Goodluck Jonathan

HISTORICAL EVENTS

  • 1967 (July 6): First shots are fired that formally start of thirty months of the Biafran war.
  • 1994 (October): The Nigerian government established the "Petroleum Trust fund" to disburse profits from the oil industry for public works and social intervention.

PHYSICAL

  • Nigeria is about twice the size of California
  • It has the Adamawa highlands, Mambilla Plateau, Jos Plateau, Obudu Plateau, the Niger River, River Benue and Niger Delta.

CLIMATE AND AGRICULTURE

  • Nigeria has a Tropical Hot climate
  • There are large scale farmers here
  • They raise animals like cow,sheep,lamb,and chicken

EDUCATION

  • There are 27 state owned schools in Nigeria
  • The first 6 years of school is mandatory
  • The third year of school they learn english
