HAITIAN REVOLUTION

BEFORE REVOLUTION

  • France colonized Haiti in the 1600's
  • The main export was coffee and spice from plantations
  • Runaway slaves called Marrons began to gather in mountains
  • The slaves hear rumors of being freed and it spurs rebellion

MAJOR EVENTS

  • 1790 - Vincent Ogé leads free colored rebellion in north.
  • 1791 - Vincent Ogé executed, Toussaint leads north and south slave rebellion.
  • 1793 - British invade San Domingo.
  • 1794 - Jacobin frees slaves so Toussaint changes sides to the French

MAJOR EVENTS CONT.

  • 1801 - Napoleon come to Haiti to restore slavery.
  • 1802 - Napoleon exiled Toussaint to France and he dies
  • 1803 - Jean-Jacques Dessalines takes over Toussaint's work
  • Haiti became an independent country on January 1, 1804.

DIFFERENCES FROM AMERICA

  • The difference is that in the Haitian revolution it was a slave rebellion.
  • But similarities are the fact that the French and British are involved.
  • The British and French were against each other.
  • They were both centered around money and oppression.

  • 2008- April- Riots over the price of food
  • 2008- August- Bill Clinton sends envoy to help situation

  • 1989 - Flood in Île de la Gonâve 4,945 familles affected
  • 1994 - Hurricane Gordon kills 2,000
  • 2004 - Hurricane Jeanne kills 1,900
  • 2008 - Tropical storm fey kills 800
  • 2010 - Earthquake kills 230,000
