PRESENTATION OUTLINE

OLD & NEW HOLLYWOOD

Hollywood, informally Tinseltown, is a neighbourhood notable for its place as home of the US film industry.

The earliest most affluent film companies were Warner Brothers Pictures, Paramount, RKO, Metro Goldwin Meyer, and 20th Century Fox,

Universal, United, and Columbia Pictures were also considered noteworthy.

Disney, monogram, and Republic were considered third-tier.

Directors began to receive greater recognition for using and trademarking personal styles in the creation of their films.

It saw a rise of "edgier" stars like James Dean and Marilyn Monroe.

In New Hollywood, the film director, rather than the studio, took on a key authorial role.

Films made in this era are stylistically characterised in that their narrative often strongly deviated from classical norms.

Saw Hollywood dominated by musicals, historical epics, and other films that benefited from the larger screens, wider framing and improved sound.
