WHO WAS CHARLEMAGNE?

  • Charlemagne is known as the greatest king during the Middle Ages.
  • Son of the first Carolingian Empire King, Pippin the Short
  • He created an ideal that would impact European history for many years after

WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE TIME PERIOD OF 768-814?

TIME PERIOD

  • In 768 Charlemagne's father dies, and divided the empire between Charlemagne and his Charlemagne's brother.
  • In 771 Charlemagne's brother dies, the whole empire is left to Charlemagne.
  • Charlemagne rules the empire for 46 years.
  • Pest and famine were present during the time period

CAROLINGIAN EMPIRE

CAROLINGIAN EMPIRE

  • Each county was ruled under the king's name by counts (local nobles)
  • Charlemagne had the government use writing as a tool
  • Large army and very well trained
  • Education was not a big deal until Charlemagne began his reign
