MID 1800S

  • Slavery was forbidden
  • No one wanted to admit blacks and whites were equal
  • Only white men could vote
  • Blacks demanded the right to vote

NEW STATE CONSTITUTION

  • In 1850, Michigan made a new state constitution
  • Black votes were considered but not included
  • Allowed whites from other countries to vote, but they had to become a U.S. citizen
  • Male Native Americans could vote if they gave up their loyalty to their tribe
  • The issue of allowing black men to vote did go on the state ballot in 1850 but was defeated
