PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Cell (Plasma) Membrane

(Fluid Mosiac Model)

Function

  • Regulates what enters and leaves the cell
  • Provides protection & support

Components of Membrane

  • Phospholipids
  • Glycoprotein
  • Glycolipid
  • Cholesterol
  • Protein Channel (Integral)
  • Peripheral Proteins

Phospholipids

Phospholipid

Phospholipids

  • hydrophilic heads like water
  • hydrophobic tails hate water
  • Form a lipid bilayer in the membrane
  • Draw a phospholipid and label it.
  • made up gycerol and 2 fatty acids

Cholesterol

A lipid found in animal cell membranes

Cholesterol is wedged between the phospholipids

Cholesterol keeps the membrane fluid

Glycolipid

Lipid with a carbohydrate attached

Function is to keep the membrane stable & cell recognition

Glycoprotein

Carbohydrate attached to a protein

Function of Glycoprotein

  • Cell Recognition
  • Intercellular attachment
  • Cell identity markers (antibody processing)

Protein Channel

Transmembrane (Integral) Protein

Function of Channel Protein

  • Facilitates the movement of substances across the membrane
  • Participates in facilitated diffusion and active transport

Peripheral Proteins

Protein that attach temporarily to the membrane

Function of Peripheral Proteins

  • enzymes
  • transports hydrophobic molecules
  • Electron carriers
