WHAT IS THE MOON FESTIVAL?

  • The moon festival is the 2nd most important holiday in the Chinese tradition.
  • It is celebrated in fall for family gathering, and harvest
  • In China, roundness means harmony
  • The moon festival is on August 15 (lunar calendar)

HISTORY

  • The first traces of the moon festival were first found 3000 years ago
  • They gave offerings to a moon goddess
  • Officially became a festival from the 900-1200 in the Song Dynasty
  • Moon cakes were not a thing until 1200-1300

THE LEGEND OF CHANG’E

MOON CAKES

  • Moon cakes are one of the most favored times in the moon festival
  • It has many different fillings
  • It is usually round
  • There are a lot of Chinese characters on the moon cake

FAMILY REUNIONS

  • Many children go back to their parents, or grandparents.
  • Family reunions should be fun
  • Lots of people travel across the world
  • Families usually eat at a round table at night, under the moon

FUN FACTS!

  • During the moon festival, one box of 12 moon cakes were sold for 1000RMB!
  • At night, they will usually light lanterns.
  • MOONCAKES are sold everywhere in China, even at at McDonalds, and Starbucks.
  • On the day of the festival, (aug 15 lunar calendar) it is always a full moon.
