African masks can be traced back to well past the Paleolithic times, but are still present even today. Most of these masks are found in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, they are also popular all throughout the continent. Ritual and ceremonial masks are an essential feature of the traditional culture and art of the peoples of Sub-Saharan Africa.
