WHAT IS A PHENOME?

  • Phenomes- The smallest parts of sound in a spoken word that make a difference in how a sound changes a words meaning.

Phenomic Awareness is the understanding that the sounds of a spoken language work together to make words.

CHILDREN SHOW THEIR AWARENESS BY:

  • Changing the phenome in the word: EX: hat to pat
  • Recognizing which words begin with the same sound.
  • Isolating and saying the first or last sound in a word: EX: beginning of bat is b, the ending of cat is t.
