PRESENTATION OUTLINE

What is an electric circuit

And how does it work?

The flow of electrons through a material is called electric current

A circuit is a complete path for current to flow through

the parts of a circuit

  • a source of electrons (battery)
  • a load (i.e. a bulb)
  • wires
  • a switch

The load uses the electric energy and offers some resistance to the flow of electrons converting the electric energy to light, heat, or mechanical energy.

The switch opens and closes the circuit

There are two kinds of circuits

In a series circuit all the parts of a circuit are connected one after another

If there is a break in the circuit, electricity cannot flow

In a parallel circuit there is more than one path for electricity to flow

Advantage: If there is a break in the circuit, current has other paths to flow
