THE DEVELOPMENT OF MEDICINE OVER THE PAST 200 OR SO YEARS HAS BEEN CRITICAL IN DAY TO DAY LIFE

In the Tudor era medicine was not understood as well as today. Doctors did not know about a lot of deadly diseases and how to treat them. They would experiment a lot and choose the thing that work most frequently.

Surgery was one of the worst things about going to the doctors because they did not have antibiotics or anaesthesia instead they used herbal spices and alcohol to calm the body. This meant that it would hurt like crazy and you would get infected because of your open wounds.

Giving birth was a very dangerous thing. You had a major chance of dying of blood loss and if you were poor you could not get treated. 5% of women die in child birth. And even if you didn’t die of childbirth your child had a 12% chance to die in there 1st year.

It was rare to find very old people in the Tudor era because unlike today where people can use medicine and take care of themselves, you had to go to a doctor every time you were unwell. The average life expectancy was 39 to 40 years old but rich people lived longer. For example Elizabeth the first lived for about 70 years which is still low on today’s average but was really high in those days

The plague doctors came into profession in the 1300 and ended in the 17-18th century. They were called plague doctors because there was a worldwide plague called the Black Death. They were surprisingly advanced compared to their time. Intentional or not they wore masks which protected them from the airborne virus and they has herbs in their beaks to freshen the air. This is similar to doctors wearinng full body protection when dealing with a contagious diseases
