BELIEFS

#1 Calls to Action:
Education for Reconciliation
62. - necessity for Indigenous education to be directly involved in creating a foundation in their communities
- learning and sharing one's lifeways to ensure proper relations with all creation

it is a necessity to meet the obligations we hold as part of the Truth and Reconciliation calls to action.

#2 Knowledge has its source in personal journey and thinking. All people have the ability to know and to share, and to bring great contribution to understanding and learning.

to create self-reliance in Indigenous students, we need to cultivate an understanding of their own importance in their personal learning journey; as well as the influence that their personal knowledge and understanding has on that of others around them.

#3 The development of a positive, personal and cultural identity, and having a sense of belonging to both the Aboriginal and wider world community.

as reflected in the image of the medicine wheel. Indigenous education needs to meet not just the intellectual aspects of an individual but also the spiritual, emotional and physical aspects.

#4 Traditional contemporary knowledge, attitudes and skills are necessary to be contributing members of society but it needs to be grounded in an Indigenous worldview and be culturally responsive.

when educators use knowledge about social, cultural and language background of their students, the academic achievement of those students will improve.

Key elements

Indigenous educators need to possess:
- professional knowledge
- pedagogical skills
-flexibility
-capacity for continual professional development
- commitment to meeting the needs of diverse students in their communities

The program needs to have a greater importance placed on the awareness of traditional values, to instill a sense of pride in being an Indigenous educator.

education programming needs to be a synthesis of formal teaching and traditional teaching. By creating a greater awareness of traditional values, you strengthen the self-worth of indigenous students. The increase in self-worth will be reflected in their achievement.

Instruction needs to respect:
- creativity
- value of experience
- diversity
-personal journey

indigenous people have creativity ingrained in them, it is important to ensure that this creativity is encouraged and celebrated.
when students understand themselves and their backgrounds it will lead to a greater understanding of their students and communities

Students need to experience opportunities for:
- intensive observation
- personal reflection
- exposure to a broad range in strategies for addressing student learning
- differentiated instruction

students need to have directed and intensive opportunity for observation of master teaching.
the opportunity to have personal reflection possibly through sharing circles invites students to share their experiences and observations in an informal and nonthreatening way. Reflection also allows students to better analyze their strengths and areas for improvement.
as any other learner, there is a need for differentiated instruction and the openness to alternative method of showing understanding.

Challenges/Strategies

Challenge: Lack of confidence in their own abilities.

through honoring existing knowledge and understanding, by placing value on tradition and traditional ways of learning, an Indigenous student can develop confidence in themselves as learners.

Challenge: Depth of learning opportunity

programming needs to ensure that instruction goes beyond conventional methods of teaching mainstream curriculum and that Indigenous content is embedded in training.

Challenge: Personal circumstances

issues of a personal nature may exist for students, it is integral to their success that academic and personal supports are in place for all students.
This may be reflected in a process similar to Success One.
Establishing relationship with student will be important not just during the time that they are in class but throughout the year as they learn and grow in their home communities.

Challenge: Practicum experience

providing students with strategies to deal with student engagement, parental support or lack of, ensuring supportive cooperating teacher placements, and timely, relevant, constructive feedback will be crucial to a students practicum experience.

The education of Indigenous teachers requires a move from the transmission of traditional, prescribed curricula to providing teachers with the ability to become responsive to the complex demands of a diverse classroom.

The education of Indigenous teachers should be grounded in Aboriginal language, culture and ways of knowing.

Indigenous teacher education must thrive to improve the quality and quantity of learning through relevant course work, exceptional practicum experiences, and creating an environment where students become self-reliant and committed to bringing their own knowledge to the classroom experience.
