Rock and roll is a genre that is very important to American history, but it wasn't "invented".

Rock music evolved out of a few different genres and events colliding.

This mix lead to the characteristics of rock and roll: a small group with loud instruments

Typically including drums, a singer, and especially the electric guitar.

One very important piece of this beginning was blues.

Blues was a simple kind of music, typically played on the acoustic guitar, that was very popular among the poor and the black communities in the 1920s.

Jazz and gospel music, with their loud and excited sound, also contributed to rock.

Because of rock's roots in traditionally black kinds of music, it borrowed some unusual rhythms, like using beats 2 and 4 instead of 1 and 3. This is called the "backbeat".

However, most of these genres used lots of people all at once...

In the 30s, the electric guitar had been invented to keep up with the growing sound of big band jazz.

Even when groups started to get smaller, the guitar stayed around. It became essential to the early rock groups.

By the time America entered the 1950s, rock and roll was the biggest music genre of the day.
