Prayer Leader: Recognizing your divine presence in this place, we begin our prayer and our retreat in your name with the sign of the cross.
God of all creation, we gather this morning to welcome this new day, your gift to us. We know that you created each of us in your image and likeness. You formed each of us in the secret of our mothers’ wombs. You call each of us by name to walk with you this day. Bless us as we begin our retreat. May our hearts be open to one another and to all that you have to teach us today. We offer this prayer in the name of Jesus, your Son. Amen.
Reader: A Reading from St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians
There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; to another the expression of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit; to another mighty deeds; to another prophecy; to another discernment of spirits; to another varieties of tongues; to another interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them individually to each person as he wishes.
Recognizing that just as we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we too are and have gifts from God:
Reader 1: Persons are gifts that God sends to me wrapped. Some are wrapped beautifully; they are attractive when I first see them. Some come in ordinary wrapping paper. Others have been mishandled in the mail. Once in a while there is a “Special Delivery.” Some persons are gifts that come wrapped loosely, others tightly.
But the wrapping is not the gift. It is easy to make that mistake. It is amusing when babies do it—when they play with the wrapping instead of the gift. Sometimes the gift is very easy to open up. Sometimes I need others to help. Is it afraid? Does it hurt? Maybe it has been opened up before and thrown away. Could it be that the gift is not for me?
I am a person. Therefore, I am a gift too—a gift to myself first of all. God the Creator gave myself to me. Have I ever looked inside the wrappings? Am I afraid to? Perhaps I have never accepted the gift that I am. Could God’s gift be anything but beautiful? I love the gifts that those who love me give me. Why not the gift from God?
Am I a gift to other persons? Am I willing to be given by God to others? Do others have to be content with the wrappings, never permitted to enjoy the gift? Every meeting of persons is an exchange of gifts. Friendship is a relationship between persons who see themselves as they truly are. A friend is a gift not just to me but to others through me. Persons are gifts, gifts received and gifts given.
Prayer Leader: This weekend, we will learn much about our individual God-given gifts and talents as well as the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Let us turn to God to help us use our gifts wisely this weekend and always. Please respond, Lord Hear Our Prayer.
Prayer Leader: For wonder and awe of God’s creation. Response: Lord, hear our prayer
Go Forth Prayer leader: Spirit of God, we lift up these words of prayer and petition to you this morning. As we grow closer to you and to one another, may the presence of your loving grace fill our hearts and minds. Be with us as we seek to discover more fully our individual giftedness. As we hear the call to live out the gifts we’ve been given, help us to say ‘yes’ to the challenge of discipleship. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
