The Fungi Kingdom

The First of Three Kingdoms

Untitled Slide

  • Reproduction for mushrooms: spores
  • Carried by air or water currents
  • Spores have protective coat
  • Needs a proper environment to grow

Mushrooms

  • Hypha grows out and begins to eat
  • Growing produces more Hyphae
  • Larger form is called mycelium
  • In time then produces a fruit called..

PARASITES

  • Fungus that grows on the body or in
  • Athletes Foot
  • Tape worm
  • Other parasite...can be stagnant for years

Mould and Yeast

  • Mould grows on breads you
  • Fruiting bodies called: sporangia
  • Yeast stays a microorganism
  • When they grow they just reproduce
  • They stick to themselves and are called "buds"

Yeast

  • What do you think yeast needs to grow?
  • Thursday we will do a lab
  • Predict what you think will happen
  • Three options: yeast/water, yeast/brown sugar, yeast/white sugar
  • Write a prediction in your journals

BACTERIA

The Second Kingdom of Microorganisms

Bacteria

  • Found every where
  • Shaped: spherical, spiral or rod-shaped
  • Reproduce: with fission (bacteria/2)
  • Replication can happen fast! (20 mins)
  • When in danger, can form spores to hide

BACTERIA

  • Can feed on the insides of living bodies
  • Examples: whooping cough, cholera, typhoid
  • Food poisoning is a common bacteria problem

USEFUL BACTERIA

  • Yoghurt: bacteria in milk and let it go sour
  • Vinegar: allowing other bacteria to feed on ethanol
  • Blue-green Algae line in seas, oceans and lakes

The Protoctista Kingdom

Amoebas, Viruses and Decomposers

Protoctista

  • Some get energy from the sun
  • Others feed like animals (often called uni-cellular animals)
  • Three types: Cell with long hair (flagellum)
  • Cells with a coating of hairs (cilia)
  • Cells with no hair- but a foot like structure (pseudopodia)

DECOMPOSERS

  • Bacteria, fungi and insects
  • Release nutrients into the soil from dead bodies or plants
  • Left overs leave the soil full of nutrients
