Coral animals are tiny relatives of jellyfish
Live together in vast numbers
Tiny algae grow within the body of coral
Algae provides substances that feed coral
When coral animals die their skeletons stay

Coral animals can't grow in cold water
Reefs can be hundreds of kilometers long
They can also be hundreds of meters thick
Most reefs usually grow outwards towards the open ocean.

How coral reefs form

when coral animals die their skeletons remain and coral builds on top.
Coral cannot form in cold water.
coral usually forms below 40 meters.
Sponge, clams, sea urchins, and starfishes home in coral reefs.
