  • Coral animals can't grow in cold water
  • Reefs can be hundreds of kilometers long
  • They can also be hundreds of meters thick
  • Most reefs usually grow outwards towards the open ocean.

How coral reefs form

  • when coral animals die their skeletons remain and coral builds on top.  
  • Coral cannot form in cold water.
  • coral usually forms below 40 meters. 
  •  Sponge, clams, sea urchins, and starfishes home in coral reefs.
