BORN

  • September 30th, 1928
  • Born in Sighet Transylvania
  • Grew up with 3 sisters very religious
  • Was attacked but never died
  • He is still alive and goes back to concentration camps to visit

EARLY LIFE

  • Had 3 siblings- Hilda, beatnce, tzipora
  • Mother and father- Sarah & shlomo
  • 2 kids survived war, 1 died
  • His family spoke Yiddish most of time
  • German, Hungarian and Romanian languages spoken

WORD WAR 2

  • Wiesel and father sent to attack camp
  • Remained with father for 8 months
  • Hard weather, shuffled among 3 concentrations camps
  • January 29th, 1945 his father was beaten by nazis
  • Father suffered very badly of exhaustion

ELIE WIESEL IN HOLOCAST

  • Survived the holocast as he watched millions of other people die
  • People were told they were going to shower, were really going into gas chambers
  • Cut their hair off so they wouldn't be able to tell who was who
  • Squished in trains with dead bodies laying everywhere
  • Babies thrown up and shot

AFTER THE WAR

  • Wiesel taught Hebrew and worked as a choirmaster
  • Wiesel refused to write about his experiences during holocast
  • Got persuaded to write about experiences
  • Payed a $100 pro-forma advance
  • Book sold 1,046 copies over the last next 18 months

LIFE IN UNITED STATES

  • 1955 he moved to New York being a us citizen he was forced to stay
  • Wiesel wrote over 40 books in the us
  • Awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1986
  • Published the two volumes of his memories
  • Became a popular speaker on the subject of the holocast

RECENT

  • 2006 he traveled to Auschwitz with Oprah Winfrey
  • 2007 awarded the lifetime achievement award
  • Is a member of international advisory board
  • Participated in conference at the upper house chamber
