ANCIENT GREECE VOCABULARY

  • City-State- a self governing state consisting of a city and surrounding territiory
  • Golden Age- a time of great happiness, prosperity, and achievement
  • Athens- greek or ancient city of Greece near Saronic Gulf
  • Sparta- ancient city S Greece in Peloponnese of Laconia
  • Hellenistic- of or relating to Greek history, culture, or art after Alexander the Great

Comparison Between Sparta and Athens

Athens does not have girls education but Sparta does. Athens government is democratic and Sparta's is oligarchic. They are both int the country of Greece.

Daily Life of Ancient Greece

Slavery was a very important part of Ancient Greece. Men could do more than women. The women would stay at home and be the house keepers. If a mans daughter wanted to be married she had to marry the man her father wanted her to.

Ancient Greece Government

Greece had a lot of different governments because there were a lot of different city-states. They were divided into 4 groups, monarchies, tyrannies, democracies, and oligarchies.

Alexander the Great

Alexander the Great was a king of the kingdom Macedon and he was also a member of the Argead dynasty. He was important because he conquered Persia. He was also important because he was a great leader, and one of the most powerful leaders.

Parthenon

The Parthenon is located in Athens, Greece. It was built in 447 BCE. It was built by Phidias a sculptor. This temple belonged to the goddess Athena. It also sits on top of an Acropolis. An acropolis is a hill that sits underneath the Parthenon. It keeps the remains of a lot of ancient temples.

Social Structure

Athens is the upper class. They had the most power and position in the society. If they wanted to be an Athen they had to be born in Athens. The middle class is Metics. They were not native to the Athens. They just came to settle in Athens. They were involved in trading and manufacturing. The Lower class were the freedmen. They were the people who were slaved but then became free. The slaves were next. This was the last class. They were rescued from war or were criminals. They could have even been brought by people or if they wanted to be free they had to pay large amounts.

Zeus

Zeus was in charge of the gods . He was also concerned with hospitality. Zeus always had curly hair. He even married his own sister.

Dionysus
Dionysus was the god of wine. He would always have a wine cup, a leopard and a fruiting vine. He is the son of Zeus and Semele.
