TRADE IN NOMADIC SOCIETY

  • Pastoral nomads sought trade and exchange
  • Drove their herd in migratory cycles
  • Produced millet, potttery, leather goods, iron
  • Maintained caravan routes
  • Moved around a lot to expand trade routes

TURKISH MILITARY EXPANSION

  • Long history of Chinese interaction
  • Converted to Islam in 10th century BC and invaded SW Asia
  • Extended Turkish rule to Syria &Palestine
  • Migrated to Anatolia in 11th century and made it Islamic
  • Ghaznavid Turks dominated North India

GENGHIS KHAN'S POWER

  • Khan promoted people based on merit rather than position
  • He brought lower classes of conquered people into his tribe
  • Peasants loved him for this, gained many fans
  • Their military skills (speed and archery) were very strong
  • They were uncommonly adaptable

POLITICAL ORGANIZATION OF THE MONGOLS

  • Organized new military units
  • Tribal armies reorganized into tumens
  • Broke up tribal affiliations
  • Chose officials based on on talent and loyalty

KHUBILAI KHAN

  • Chinggis Khan's grandson conquered Mongol rule in China
  • New hierarchy between Mongol and its allies (northern/southern Chinese)
  • Put foreign administrators in charge
  • Favored merchants, cities, peasants rather than Chinese elite
