WAR IN THE PHILIPPINES

• Philippines were a base for Spanish fleet
• May 1 Dewey launched surprise attack in Manila Bay
• February 1898 Roosevelt prepared for action on Philippines

THE ROUGH RIDERS

• Roosevelt resigned position as assistant secretary of navy
• Let first regiment of us Calvary volunteers
• Assorted group of former cow hands and college students rough riders
• Rough riders and African American soldiers and tenth cal varies
• Joined battle of San Juan hill

ROUGH RIDERS CONTINUED

• Americans captured San Juan hill
• Spanish fleet tried to break our of Santiago
• Lasted 4 hours spanish fleet was destroyed
• Ended Spanish resistance in Cuba

PUERTO RICO

• Us turned to Spanish colony Puerto Rico
• Us troops quickly took control
• August 12 Spanish signed armistice ending war

A SPLENDID LITTLE WAR

• John hay called the war a splendid little war
• Lasted 4 months 400 Americans killed
• 2,000 Americans died of diseases
• African Americans battled segregation
• Cubans treated African Americans equally

ACQUISITIONS

• Us and Spain signed treaty of Paris on 12-10-1898
• Cuba became a protectorate
• Puerto Rico and Guam became territories of US
• Spain surrendered Philippines to us for $20 million

CUBAN PROTECTORATE

• 1901 US granted Cubans full independence
• Platt ammendment prohibited Cuba from making treaties

NEW GOVERNMENT FOR PUERTO RICO

• Us set up new Puerto Rican gov under foraker act
• 1917 jones act made Puerto Rico a territory of us
• Granted American citizenship to Puerto Ricans

ACQUIRING THE PHILIPPINES

• Anti imperialists opposed American enthusiasm
• People feared competition of Filipino laborers
• February 1899 Emilio aguinaldo began to fight for independence
• More than 4,000 Americans died
• 200,000 soldiers and civilians died
