BACKROUND INFORMATION

  • His real name is Giuseppe roncalli
  • He was a history teacher
  • Got elected in 1958
  • He refgined from October 1958-1963
  • He was elected at age 77

HELPING THE CHURCH

  • He was a kindly unassuming Italian who had worked in many of the worlds trouble spots during his career as a bishop and and diplomat
  • He called for the Vatican 11 which Showed a sign of the holy spirits continued presence in the church
  • He wanted to hold his own council and got an unexpected response
  • It started with over 200 bishops
  • He served in several papals including papal nuncio in France

HELPING WITH THE CHURCH

  • He was elected at age 77
  • He took the name john to show all the antipopes he was the one and only real pope
  • He set up the second Vatican council to help make the church a better place and solve problems
  • He only lasted four years as pope but he did several things to help the church
  • He was also known as a servant of God

  • Was pope of the Catholic Church from May 1978-April 2005
  • He was the second longest serving pope in modern history
  • Was born in poland and was the first non-Italian pope
  • He went back to Poland several times during his reign

  • He helped try to end communist rule in Poland his home land
  • helped improve relations with Judaism, Islam, and the Eastern Orthodox Church
  • He was the most traveled pope ever
  • Someone tried to assain him during his reign
  • But he survived the bullets and continued to reign and help the church

  • John Paul II since his October 1978 election to the papacy, was born in Wadowice, a small city 50 kilometres from Cracow, on May 18, 1920.
  • He was the second of two sons born to Karol Wojtyla and Emilia Kaczorowska
  • He made his First Holy Communion at age 9 and was confirmed at 18.
  • he enrolled in Cracow's Jagiellonian University in 1938 and in a school for drama.
  • The Nazi occupation forces closed the university in 1939 and young Karol had to work in a quarry

  • He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1969, and from 1973 to 1979
  • He became the Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998, and was created a Cardinal in 2001 by Pope John Paul II.
  • on 28 February 2013, a papal conclave elected Bergoglio as his successor on 13 March. He chose Francis as his papal name in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. Francis
