VACATION TO EUROPE

TRAVELING THERE

  • We're taking a plane from the St.louis airport
  • and landing in London, England. We will use Delta Airlines, and it
  • is going to cost us $1652.20. The depart time is 11:25 A.M, and we will
  • arrive at 6:35 A.M in London. So it will take 13 hours and ten
  • minutes.

BIG BEN IN LONDON

  • It was completed in the year 1858,
  • and is 316 ft tall, or 96 meters.
  • The Palace of Westminster is the place where the House of Commons
  • and House of Lords meet. These are the two Houses of Parliament
  • for the UK. Big Ben is attached to it because

TRIP ON THE CHUNNEL

  • It cost us 350 dollars for two people to ride the train.
  • It takes about three hours to get from London to Paris in the
  • Chunnel. The idea of digging a tunnel between France and Great Britain
  • has actually been around since 1802. In 1856 Aimé Thomé de Gamond was a
  • Frenchman who made a plan to dig two tunnels, one from each country.

CHUNNEL HISTORY

  • The two tunnels would eventually meet at an island.
  • In. 1880 Sir Edward Watkins actually started to drill from both sides.
  • But after about two years, the British people began to panic and thought that
  • it would lead to an invasion of the French. So they forced Watkins to stop
  • drilling. in 1973 they agreed once again to make the tunnel, but Britain

CONTINUED

  • stopped two years later because of an economic reason.
  • Finally in 1984, they both agreed to start digging to tunnel again.
  • They began building on the British side in 1987, and on the French side in
  • 1988. And the Chunnel was opened on May 6th,1994.

PARIS, FRANCE

  • The Eiffel Tower in París France
  • is 1,063 feet tall. It was built for a number of reasons.
  • The one main reason was for the World Exhibition, also known
  • as the Paris Exposition of 1889. It commemorated the one hundred year
  • anniversary of the French Revolution in Europe.

AN INTERESTING FACT

  • Twenty five workers began brushwork in. March on a top to
  • bottom painting job that was expected to take eighteen months.
  • Once they finally finish, they will have put 60 tons of paint in three shades
  • of brown. Darkest at the bottom, lightest at the top.
  • It took two years , two months, and five days to build it.

LOUVRE

  • The louvre is a museum . The most famous objects are the paintings.
  • It would take 25 days to see everything that is in the museum.
  • Most of these paintings are hundreds of years old.

ROME,ITALY

  • The Colosseum in Rome was built for the entertainment of the citizens.
  • It was also built to show the greatness of their empire too. Emperor Vespasian
  • was ruling when they began to build the building. They began in 72A.D and finished
  • eight years later in 80 A.D when Vespasian's son Titus was the new emperor.
  • The Colosseum's original name was actually Amphiteatrum Flavium.

LA SAGRADA FAMILIA, BARCELONA,SPAIN

  • They began to build it in 1882.
  • This is an unfinished church.
  • It was designed and made by the architect Antoni Gaudi.
  • However,he died before he finished building it.
  • They are going to finish it, expecting it to be done in 2041.

EDINBURGH CASTLE, EDINBURGH,SCOTLAND

  • This castle is over a thousand years old.
  • Edinburgh castle is actually built on part of an old extinct volcano.
  • In the twelve century,ownership of the castle switched to England, but shortly
  • back to Scotland. The castle was also used as a prison back in the 18th and early
  • 19th century. It was also used as a prison in World War 1.

EUROPA-PARK,RUST, GERMANY

  • This is one of the few theme parks in the German speaking countries
  • that is open in the winter. It is also the biggest park in the German speaking
  • countries. It's also the second most popular theme park in Europe, Disneyland in
  • Paris is the first. In this park, they have eleven roller coasters. They even have a
  • mascot, which is also a mouse. His name is Eruo. Then we left to go back to America.
