VA/MD
- indentured servants
- at first Africans were able to buy themselves out
- laws passed and slaves became mostly African
-as African populations grew, so did the amount of slaves and e idea of African slavery
- slaves became angry and planned revolts

CA
-Slaves were around from beginning
- slaves were important imports and people were rewarded for bringing them in
- black pop. grew over the whites
- revolts by slaves caused laws to pass to control masters power over the slaves
- schools for blacks established
- prohibition of slaves in 1770

GA
- no slaves to be owned
- laws collapse and slave numbers grow
- slaves shall not read nor write

Middle Colonies
- slaves received humane treatment
- black pop. grows in 1700's
- laws against black slaves were created
- slaves revolted
- people in Pennsylvania thought slavery was wrong
- slavery not as popular in middle colonies

New England
- slaves used for construction in Connecticut
- slaves important to commercial life
- slave trade good for the economy
- black pop. grew slowly
- blacks could read and write but we're not allowed to triable alone or without permission
- rebellions plotted
- slaves were not treated as badly as those in the south
