EARLY LIFE
- Born in Aracataca, Colombia, on March 6, 1927
- Known by his family and later his fans as Gabo, or Gabi
- His father was a pharmacist and his mother cared for her 12 children
- Raised by his grandparents until he was eight
- Gabo’s grandmother loved storytelling, so that’s where he got his whimsey

- Gabo’s grandmother loved storytelling, so that’s where he got his whimsy
- Gabo got a scholarship to boarding school at a young age because he was incredibly smart
- However, gabi gabs was much more interested in drawing cartoons than things such as athletics

YOUNG ADULT LIFE
- Gabi knew he wanted to be a journalist, but his parents insisted he study law, so he went to law school at the National University Of Colombia
- A short story of his was published in 1947
- The university shut down due to unrest, so even though he transferred somewhere else, he never completed his law degree
- Instead he moved to Barranquilla and published his first novella, “Leaf Storm”

ADULT LIFE
- Gabi was committed to socialist beliefs and was friends with people like Fidel Castro
- His grandfather was very liberal, and Gabi thinks that’s where his views originated
- He met his wife, Mercedes, in school, and married her in 1958. They travelled by greyhound across the southern US and settled in Mexico City. They had 2 kids
- Gabito founded QAP

DEATH
- Our main man died on April 27, 2014 in Mexico City
- He was 84
- Mercedes is still alive and is 87 years old
THE MARQUEZ FAMILY AFTER GABI’S DEATH
- Rodrigo is 60 now, and he is a film director and tv screenwriter. He went to Harvard and lives in LA. He and his wife have 2 daughters
- Gonzalo is 55 and lives in New York as a graphic designer. He isn’t married and doesn’t have kids
- Together they’re producing a 100YOS series for Netflix
