ABLESISM IDEOLOGY

  • Presumes able-bodiedness therefore marginalises disability
  • Able bodied are seen as the norm
  • People with disabilities should strive to become that norm
  • If they cannot get near that norm they should keep their distance
  • Disability is a 'bad' thing that should be overcome

Sport can play a huge role in enhancing lives and breaking down barriers around disability.

1. What was your reaction to this perspective?
2. What was the big 'lie' Stella referred to?
3. What does it mean to 'objectify' people with disabilities?

Objectifying Disabled People?

  • A product of low societal expectations
  • perception that disability is something to overcome
  • could be seen as a negative circumstance in order to comfort able bodied people
  • reduces people with disabilities TO their disabilities

The Wheelchair Rugby team is included at the same level as any other person or group featured.
It’s not over the top, it just fits in naturally.

“I think the more disability is integrated naturally into the media, the more likely perspectives will change” (Shivas,2015)
