Rhythm and Blues

or should we call it "pop"?

This week we're jumping back to modern day and considering 2 kinds of music that are often confused - pop music and rhythm and blues (R&B).

In the early 1900s, rhythm and blues was originally used to describe gospel or "electric blues"...which is just the blues on electric guitar.

Before these kinds of music were called R&B, they were called
"race music". Why do you think that is?

Then, with the rise of rock and roll, R&B was used to describe rock music that still drew heavily from gospel and blues traditions.

Finally, the R&B label landed on a broad range of dance, funk, soul, and hip hop music.

Famous R&B singers would be Michael Jackson...

and Beyonce.

R&B often gets confused with another "genre" of music that has many styles lumped together - pop music.

However, where R&B has a key trait - soulful singing about triumph and failure in relationships and love...

Pop(ular) music has to be just that.

Can a R&B song be a pop song too? Does it have to be?
