THE GREAT PYRAMID OF GIZA

FACTS

  • The oldest of the 7 wonders
  • Was 481 feet tall (it is currently 25 feet less tall)
  • It took around 20 years to build
  • Scholars are unsure who built it, whether it was slave labor, or if Egyptians themselves length their effort
  • Constructed in 2580-2560 BCE
  • Built in Al Haram, Giza Governorate, Egypt, Africa

IMPORTANCE

  • Largest of the three pyramids at Giza
  • Only surviving structure of the 7 wonders
  • Built for Pharaoh Khufu (or Cheops)

HANGING GARDENS OF BABYLON

FACTS

  • The gardens are the only one out of the 7 wonders that might not have existed.
  • If the gardens existed they are the second oldest of the 7 wonders.
  • In the hanging gardens the plants didn't actually hang.
  • Built around Mahaweel, Iraq, Asia
  • If the gardens did indeed exist, they were destroyed sometime after the first century.
  • Possibly built in 600 BCE

STATUE OF ZUES AT OLYMPIA

FACTS

  • Was about 43 feet tall
  • Made by the Greek sculptor Phidias
  • Made around 435 BCE
  • In Olympia,Greece,Europe
  • Lost and destroyed during the fifth century
  • The statue was also damaged by a earthquake in 170 BCE, but was fixed
  • The statue was destroyed one more time by fire,but was not fixed

TEMPLE OF ARTEMIS AT EPHESUS

FACTS

  • Also known as the temple of Diana
  • Artemis was an Olympian God, daughter of Zeus and Leto
  • Twin sister to Appollo
  • First temple was built around 800 BCE
  • It has been destroyed 3 times and rebuilt twice
  • Built in Ephesus, but now days would be where we consider Selcuk, Turkey,

  • Built to honor Artemis

MAUSOLEUM AT HALICARNASSUS

FACTS

  • Halicarnassus, Achamenid Empire, Asia
  • The structure was designed by the Greek architects Satyros and Pythius of Priene
  • The mausoleum was approximately 148 ft in height, and the 4 sides were adorned with sculptural reliefs, each created by one of the Greek sculptors- Leochares, Bryaxis, Scopas of Paros, and Timotheus.
  • It was destroyed by successive earthquakes from the 12th to the 15th century

  • Tomb built between 353 and 350 BCE, built for Mausolus, a local ruler in the Persian Empire, and his wife-sister Artemisia ll of Caria

COLOSSUS OF RHODES

FACTS

  • Was a statue of the Greek Titan-God of the sun Helios, erected in the city of Rhodes, on the Greek island with the same name
  • Built by Chares of Lindos in 280 BCE
  • Destroyed in 226 by an earthquake
  • Before it was destroyed it stood over 98 feet tall
  • Rhodes, Greece, Europe

  • Constructed to celebrate Rhodes, for his victory over the ruler Cyprus

LIGHTHOUSE OF ALEXANDRIA

FACTS

  • Sometimes called Pharos of Alexandria
  • It was a lighthouse built by the the Ptolemaic Kingdom between 280 and 247 BCE
  • It was between 393 and 450 feet tall
  • Badly damaged by 3 earthquakes between 956 and 1323 CE
  • The ministry of state antiquities in Egypt has planned, as of late 2015, to turn submerge-red ruins of ancient Alexandria, into an underwater museum.
