Belligerent is an adjective and a noun.
It means warlike, or one who is at war.
The synonyms include assertive, truculent, and pugnacious.

Conflict
The conflict is the major problem in a story
It normally gets solved by the protagonist
The conflict is necessary when writing a story

Demonstrative Pronoun
This is a type of pronoun.
It points out specific people or things.
They include the following: this, that, these, and those.

Exposition
The exposition is the 1st part of the plot.
It is found in the beginning of the story.
We learn a lot of basic information about the characters here.

Foreshadowing
Foreshadowing is when the story hints to what is going to happen next.
A mystery story might have clues as to who the killer is.
It helps you determine the ending of a story.

Genre
Genre is the type of story.
Each author typically specializes in one genre.
Poe's genre is horror.

Holiday Season
The story "The Gift of the Magi" takes place during the holiday season.
The main character is struggling to find her spouse a present.
She has to sell her hair in order to get a decent gift.

Irony
Irony is something that happens that goes against what the reader thinks will happen.
Della selling her hair is an example of irony. A cop getting arrested is ironic.

Jeopardy
Jeopardy is a noun.
It means "danger".
The synonyms include risk, hazard, and peril.

Kindly
Kindly is what benevolent means.
Kindly is an adjective.
It's synonyms include benign and well-meaning.

Linking Verbs
Linking verbs are verbs that do not perform an action.
It connects the subject to the predicate.
Ex: She IS pretty.

Mood
The mood of the story is the general feeling the reader gets from a story.
It shows the emotional feelings of the story.
To discuss the setting, the author uses sensory details and figurative language.

Nouns
A noun is a person, place, or thing.
A noun can be abstract, common, concrete, or proper.
It is normally the subject of the sentence.

O'Henry a very well-known author.
He wrote many short stories.
We read "The Gift of the Magi" in school.

Protagonist
The protagonist is the main character in a story.
They solve the conflict.
They go against the antagonist.

Quintessence
Quintessence is a noun.
It is the purest use or essence of something. The synonyms are paragon and exemplar.

Reflexive Pronoun
Reflexive pronouns end in -self or -selves.
It is needed in a sentence.
Ex: I gave MYSELF a pat on the back.

Setting
The setting is where the story takes place.
It includes the weather, place, time, and season.
The setting of the Harry Potter books is Hogwarts.

Type of Conflicts
There are 2 types of conflict: internal and external.
Internal takes place in the character's mind (character vs. self).
External takes place with another force (character vs. character, nature, society, and supernatural).

Unkempt
Unkempt is an adjective.
It means untidy, messy, and unpolished.
The synonyms include sloppy, disordered, and rough.

Verbs
Verbs are the action word in a sentence.
It tells what the subject is doing.
It can either be action or linking.

It is an adjective for feasible.
It means possible, able to be done.
