Hutch Hutchinson plays one of the most important positions on the baseball field at shortstop until he started playing on The Post 226 Cardinals where they already have a shortstop who is really good named Darryl. With Darryl at shortstop Hutch is forced to play second base which is very hard for him. It is also hard for hutch becuase him and his dad have a bad relationship. His dad was a minor league baseball player that was just never good enough to make it to the MLB and because of that it seemed to Hutch that his dad hated baseball.

Before the final Championship game at Rodger Dean Field Darryl and Hutch talk alone in the locker room. Darryl explains to Hutch that he needs to be grateful that he sees his Dad and that his Dad actually comes to the games.Because Darryl has never met his Dad and doesn't know who he is. His Mom has only been to two of their games the whole season.
The talk with Darryl helps Hutch understand that he is right and needs to be grateful. In the Last inning of the game Hutch is up with two outs with a runner on second. After the first pitch Hutch calls time and looks into the stands, he sees his Dad and realizes he wants him to bunt. Reluctantly Hutch lays down a perfect bunt and beats out the throw moving the runner to third. Then Darryl comes up and hits a walk off three run homerun. After the game Hutch runs up to his Dad and in the first time in awhile they hug creating a new bond in the family becoming closer.
In the Novel The big field, the author says,"All those nights and all those games when Hutch just assumed his Dad wanted to be somewhere else. Not now. He was staring hard at Hutch as Hutch had stared at him last night in the batting cages at Fallon. Like he needed to get his attention. Then Hutch saw why. Saw his Father drop his hands the way coaches did when they were telling you to bunt"(Mike Lupica 239).
This is my favorite quote because the author really brings you into the book and helps me relate to how I feel in a baseball and how I feel about my Dad and it really helps the reader fill the shoes of Hutch and feel what he's feeling in the book.
My favorite event of the novel is in the first game of the 3 game championship at Rodger dean field, when Hutch makes an error which costs him and his team the game.
This is my favorite event of then game because I have gone through similar problems that realate to Hutch's error. The way the author explains what Hutch is going through is almost exact to how i feel when I make an error or cost my team the game.
Hutch fell hard on his shoulder because"As baked out as the dirt was in the summer, no matter how much they watered in Caloosa, it was the same as if he landed in the parking lot"(Lupica 67). The metaphor shows that the dirt was so dry that it felt like pavement.
When Darryl made a play he threw the ball so hard that,"It exploded out of his hand the way balls usually exploded off his bat, and went over Tripp's head at first and halfway up into the stands"(Lupica 85). The hyperbole shows how hard Darryl threw the ball to first
I strongly recommend this book to anyone that likes baseball, plays baseball or likes a realistic entertaining book that enables them to connect to the player in the game.
