Brief History:

Christopher Columbus finds the island in 1492 and names it Hispaniola. Spain establishes a colony at Santo Domingo and later gives it to France. In 1906, a treaty is signed between the U.S. and the Dominican Republic causing the U.S. to take over its customs in exchange for purchasing its debt. Then in 1924, the US leaves and the Dominican Republic establishes a democratically elected constitutional government. Before the government was democratically elected, the leaders of the government were dictators.
