Impact

  • When it happened, most Texans thought that Texas's natural beauty would insulate it from the crisis.
  • But when the economy really collapsed, it was clear that Texas would be affected too.
  • Farmers came together to learn about soil and modern planting techniques

New Deal programs helped both the Great Depression's damage and the dust bowl's by giving people jobs to repair the damage that the Dust Bowl caused.

  • It was a terrible dust storm that teared down buildings and killed plants
  • Happened around the time of the Great Depression

  • 750,000 troops entered the service
  • 22,000 were killed
  • African Americans and Tejanos joined the military in large numbers
  • Still, most black Texans served in segregated units led by white officers
  • For Latinos, discrimination was less official, but often present
