JOHN STEINBECK

  • Steinbeck hand-wrote all of his manuscripts; they were later typed out by his publisher.
  • When Steinbeck was four years old, he was given a pony. This pony was the inspiration for his series "The Red Pony".
  • He showed a strong interest in writing from a young age.

BEFORE THE GREAT DEPRESSION

  • Life was flourishing, and many people had jobs.
  • Income was very good, and people were well off.

WHAT LED TO THE GREAT DEPRESSION

  • Many believe that the main cause of the Great Depression was the stock market crash in 1929.
  • Another cause of the Great Depression was that many banks failed throughout the 1930's.

EVERYDAY LIFE

  • Very few people actually worked, the unemployment rate was at an all time high.
  • Food was scarce, and not many people had enough food for all three meals.

OUTSIDERS
"Outsiders" are treated the same way that the name sounds. They are excluded for a particular reason, whether it be their physical appearance or their personality.

MENTALLY HANDICAPPED
Many mentally ill in today's society are treated very poorly, and many people see them as a burden

PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED
Many physically handicapped are treated the same as mentally handicapped people, and many people mistreat them

THE ELDERLY
A great deal of elderly people are mentally or physically handicapped, so they are also treated like burdens
