Christianity

In this lesson:

• Students will be able to explain the significance of certain religious holidays of Christianity.

Facts

• Christianity is the largest religion in the world. it has approximately two billion followers.
• Christianity is focussed on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, who Christians accept to be the Son of God. Jesus was conceived in Bethlehem in the Middle East more than 2000 years prior.

Beliefs

• Jesus was executed on a cross (Crucifixion) as a criminal by the Romans, and that he rose from the dead after three days. (the Resurrection).
• Christians trust that there is one God, and that he is also; God the Father God the Son The Holy Spirit
• This is called the holy trinity.
• Christians model themselves on the life and teachings of Jesus. Jesus taught individuals to love God and to show affection to each other.

Holy Book

• The holy book is the bible, which is made up of two books; the new & the old testament.
• The New Testament clarifies how God sent Jesus Christ, to restore the broken relationship of individuals and God which had been brought on by human wrong doing.

Worship

• Christians meet to worship in churches. Some gather in homes and other places. The word "Church" refers to the meeting of people to worship but it also refers to the place of worship itself.
• the religious leaders are called Priests or pastors.
• because there are many different ways of worshiping within christianity, there are also many different religions within christianity some of these are:
• Church of england
• Roman Catholic church
• Eastern orthodox

Celebrations

• Lent-a period of 40 days which ends in Easter. During this time people fast. This time is meant to remember the sacrifices that Jesus made for his people.
• easter-takes place on a sunday and it celebrates the resurrection of Jesus.
• christmas-takes place on December 25th. it celebrates the birth of jesus.

Symbols

• The cross is the earliest and the most commonly associated symbol to christianity.
• there are many different types of crosses associated with many cultures and religions within christianity.
