EUNICE KENNEDY SHRIVER

EARLY LIFE

  • Born in Brookline, MA to the affluent Kennedy family
  • Is the sister of President John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Sen. Ted Kennedy
  • Worked for U.S justice department and as a social worker where she truly felt compassion for troubled children and kids with mental disabilites

CONTRIBUTIONS TO SOCIAL JUSTICE

  • Founded the NICHD
  • In 1961, she championed the creation of the President's Panel on Mental Retardation
  • She advocated and pushed for people with mental disabilities to be given the same opportunities as others
  • She ended up founding the Special Olympics, which spawned from "Camp Shriver"

  • Eunice had a true respect for the life and dignity of all people. She saw handicapped people as people, and not as a burden to society. She wanted them to be able to grow and thrive in life.
