Discrmination is the unfair or prejudicial treatment of people and groups based on characteristics such as race, gender, age or sexual orientation. The human brain natrually puts things in categories to make sense of the world.
In the Scarlet Letter, the towns people discriminates Hester due to difference.

Very young children quickly learn the difference between each others. “Young kids find the difference between boys and girls quickly”. (Kinderman) However, the values we place on different categories are learned from our parents, our eers and the observations we make about how the world works. Often, discrimination stems from fear and misunderstanding.
In the novel, Hester tried to teach her daughter about things that other childrens learn from their parents so that Pearl can live just similar as other childern.

Discrimination is a public health issue. It stresses people out and it can lead to a wide variety of physical and mental health problems. The discrimination has been linked to issues including anxiety, depression, obesity, high blood pressure and substance abuse. The anticipation of discrimination creates its own chronic stress. People might even avoid situations where they expect they could be treated poorly, possibly missing out on educational and job opportunities.
In the story, after Hester get released from the prison, she was hard to get a job so she strated making things with her needlework skills.

So, are there any ways to deal with people who discriminate other people? If people face the other people that discriminates them, they can focus on their strengths or they can seek for some support systems. Focusing on their strengths can make people more resilient and better able to face future challenges. Also, supporting people can reminds people, who was hurt by discrimination, of their worth and help them reframe those faulty beliefs.
According to the novel, Hester found her ability to work on her needlework, she made stuff and sell it at the market place so that she will not suffer for food.
