RED CLOUD'S LIFE

  • Mahpiua Luta
  • Born in Nebraska- 1822
  • Died December 10, 1909 on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota
  • His father died when Red Cloud was 5 and his mother and uncle raised him
  • Chief of the Oglala Lakota tribe
  • Activist and folk hero
  • Native American leader who fought to save his land
  • Known for his bravery and cruelty

RESISTED WHITE SETTLEMENT

  • Red cloud successfully resisted developments of the Bozeman trail through the Montana territory
  • His resistance to the development of the road is a period of time known as Red Cloud's War
  • Red Cloud United several Native American groups to drive away the soldiers from Fort Phil Kearny

TREATMENT BY GOVERNMENT

  • Government tried to move Red Cloud and his people from their lands
  • The U.S. Government offered many treaties to him
  • The government promised to give land back and offer reservations to live on
  • The government would give them money and gifts

RED CLOUD'S LATER LIFE

  • He seemed to stay out of a lot of the fighting
  • He moved his people to Pine Ridge Reservation
  • Stepped down as leader in 1880s
  • Continued to improve the lives of others and campaigned for better living conditions
  • Later died at the Reservation at the age of 88
