PRESENTATION OUTLINE

MULTIPLE PERSONALITY DISORDER

(DISSOCIATIVE IDENTITY DISORDER)

MULTIPLE PERSONALITY DISORDER

  • An extreme form of dissociation where a person feels a lack of connection to their thoughts, feelings, or emotions
  • It’s thought that a history of extreme abuse can be a cause of this
  • It’s also the presence of 2 or more distinct personalities

symptoms

  • Compulsions
  • Psychotic-like symptoms
  • Hallucinations
  • Flashbacks
  • Emotional symptoms- feeling like “a passenger in your own body”

CAUSES

  • Physical and/or emotional abuse
  • To protect from what is happening they begin to distance themselves from their own life
  • (Almost 90% of cases show a history of abuse is involved)

In most cases of multiple personality disorder is more than just having your own conscious that you can only hear. This makes it extremely hard to live a ‘normal.’

CURES

  • There is no cure for multiple personality disorder
  • However, psychotherapy is one of the main treatments to help improve their relationships with others
  • Hypnosis can sometimes help people learn more about their different personality states to hopefully control them better
  • Talk therapy

EFFECTS ON RELATIONSHIPS

  • Parents suffering from this are usually emotionally unavailable for their kids
  • Neglect their family members
  • Kids will have to take on the role of taking care of younger siblings and their parent

Untitled Slide

  • Fewer than 200,000 US cases
  • It’s even rarer in toddlers and children (ages 3-13)

  • Each personality can have a new name, voice, and history
  • Almost 50% of adults experience at least 1 dissociative moment in their lives
  • Often misdiagnosed-people have spent from 5-12 years in a mental health facility before a correct diagnoses
  • If goes without treatment it can be lifelong
