HUMANISTIC APPROACH

Defenition: a view through which personality develops through an actualizing tendency that unfolds in accordance with each person's unique perceptions of the world

Focuses on mental capabilities that set humans apart from animals: self-awareness, creativity, planning, decision making, and responsibility

Those who adopt the humanistic approach see human behavior as motivated mainly by an innate drive toward growth that prompts to fulfill their full potential

Humanistic psychologists believe that to explain people's actions in any particular situatuion, it is more important to understand their view of the world rather than their instincts, traits, or learning experiences.

Phenomenology - way of perceiving and interpreting the world
Humanists believe everyone has a unique phenomonology that shapes personality and guides behavior

Real world example:
Coach arguing with ref. Everyone has different perception of what happend during play. Expectations and motivation are likely to influence reality and reactions from coaches, players, and fans
